Researchers Generate Content on Social Media Platforms

This is a great example for an experimental design in which content is created by researchers on social media platforms. In other words, distinct experimental conditions—as described in the aforementioned example of the contact hypothesis—can be developed with the help of established features and functions of social network, (micro) blogging, and content sharing platforms. The level with which participants’ social network is included in the experiment may vary. If participants are asked to log on the platforms with their own account, as done by Kristofferson and colleagues (2014), the salience of the connections that are formed on the sites and services are likely influencing participants’ responses. Alternatively, researchers could create accounts that are only used for the study; in this case, the social network that is digitally represented might have a weaker impact. By adjusting the privacy settings, for instance working with open, closed, or secrete Facebook groups, experimental material can remain accessible only for those participating in a study or be available to all users of the platform. It is important to note that in either case, participants must be debriefed and informed if material was developed by the researchers and not posted by a specific organization or user.
